Rauhallinen Luumäen maalaispitäjä ei jäänyt sivuun valtakunnan tapahtumista, vaan niiden seuraukset ovat joko konkreettisesti vyöryneet paikkakunnan ylitse tai heijastuneet yksittäisiin paikallisiin tapahtumiin. Itsenäisyydentien varrelle sijoittuvat eri aikakausien linnoitteet, rakennukset sekä itsenäistymisen alkuvaiheen tapahtumien muistomerkit. Tunnetuimpia kohteista ovat presidentti P.E. Svinhufvudin koti Kotkaniemi, Luumäen kirkonmäki, Taavetin linnoitus ja viime sotien aikainen Salpalinja.
Tie ja sen rinnalla kulkeva rautatie sekä Kivijärven vesireitit ovat luoneet myös pohjan Luumäen elinkeinoelämän kehittymiselle. Niitä myöden ovat kulkeneet ihmiset ja tavarat suuntaan ja toiseen. Tien varrelle on keskittynyt asutusta, palveluita ja eri toimijoita. Itsenäisyydentie road
Itsenäisyydentie road in Luumäki introduces various attractions and presents local and Finnish history. The alignment of the road, built centuries ago, reflects the changing rulers, the difficult early years of Finnish independence and the events of the most recent wars. Along the way, new attractions have been added for the summer of 2020, and the Itsenäisyydentie road has expanded to the west and north of Taavetti. The peaceful region of Luumäki was not left out of the events of the realm. Their consequences have either concretely rolled over the locality or been reflected in individual local events. Along the Itsenäisyydentie road there are fortresses, buildings and monuments from the early stages of independence.
